My Recap of 2012

January 5, 2013 By Zack Leave a Comment

2012 was quite the amazing year for me!  So many changes, so many new friends made, and so many new blessings.  So here’s my month by month recap of the highlights from last year.

January

My Wifey Dearest celebrated her birthday, and I found out that two short films I acted in, Blessings Missed and The Button, were selected as semifinalists at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival.

February

Started the third season of my web series Indy Christian Review, which ran for 10 weeks.  In addition to being on my website, the reviews were also posted on ChristianCinema.com, one of the largest online retailers of Christian movies!

March

Preproduction of season 1 of In His Steps: The Series was in full swing.  This project had been in the works since 2006, and it was so amazing to see it finally coming together.

April

My wife and I celebrated our third anniversary.  Our daughter turned 1, and we continued getting ready for the arrival of Baby #2.  I filmed a music video featuring The Diggles Family.

May

IHS_day1a_marcelaDirected the first season of In His Steps: The Series.  Production with our international cast and crew lasted for two weeks in Montrose, Colorado, and went absolutely fantastic!

June

baby2smI worked as a production assistant on an episode of A&E’s reality show Hoarders.  The very next day, we welcomed our second daughter into our lives!

July

Working furiously on editing In His Steps.  The trailer for Season 1 was released.

August

Filming at Darien Lake Theme Park, New YorkTraveled to New York to direct the Your Silver Screen Adventure project.  It was my first time to the state, and I got to celebrate my 25th birthday there!

September

In His Steps premiered online!  The fourth season of Indy Christian Review also premiered.  I tried something new and added a storyline to the reviews focusing around my trademark fedora “regenerating” into a new hat (you can watch the episode here).  I also made a CD for a local country group, Colorado Trophies, and I also got my face to appear in a video by Jeremiah Warren (click here to watch it).

October

Certified Piano Technician!I completed my classes with the American School of Piano Tuning and received my diploma certifying me as a piano technician!

November

The season finale of In His Steps went online on November 21, and is now available on DVD.

December

I was interviewed on the BlogTalk Radio show “Wielding the Sword of the Spirit” about Indy Christian Review, In His Steps, and the Rocky Mountain Christian Filmmakers Camp.

So, as you can see it was quite the eventful year!  I can’t wait to see what 2013 holds… oh wait, I do know a few things that are coming!

  • In His Steps Season 2!

  • Indy Christian Review Season 5!

  • Teaching the Rocky Mountain Christian Filmmakers Camp! (Including a possible camp in ENGLAND!)

So, yeah, something to look forward to. 😀

SAICFF Semi-Finalists!

February 7, 2012 By Zack Leave a Comment

The semi-finalists of the 2012 San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival have been announced!  I’m very excited to say that three movies that I was involved with were selected!  I acted in two of them, The Button and Blessings Missed, and was an assistant camera operator for Dad the Hero On Vacation.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to attend the festival this year, but I’m still very excited that my face will at least be there!

Indescribable

June 21, 2011 By Zack Leave a Comment

Next week I’ll be on the set of a feature film being produced by my friends the Joneses (well, one of them is actually a Graber now.  Congrats, Stacie!).  I’ll be the gaffer, or “chief lighting technician” as it’s sometimes called.  I’m looking forward to the shoot, and to working with some amazing people.  What I’m not looking forward to is spending a month in Texas in July this time.  I’ll try not to whine about the heat/humidity so much this go round, but no guarantees. 😉

Anyways, here’s a press release they’ve sent out.  Check out their website, like them on Facebook, enter their video contest, and show your support for these amazing people and their film!

Two Men…
Eight Centuries…
One Song.

Feet pounding down a narrow lane. This couldn’t be happening, not here, not now.

An old Rabbi, full of life and energy, teaching his young class of boys looks up to see the panting messenger burst through the gateway.

“Rabbi, the Crusade… the crusaders are coming!”

It’s 1096 and our story has begun…

Indescribable is an Independent Christian film being produced by a non-profit organization. Our mission with this story is to encourage young people with practical ways to love God and other people.

Indescribable tells the story behind the hymn “The Love of God” through the eyes of the author’s ten year old son. Through the excitement of the Great War, the challenges of financial difficulties and renegade Crusader violence, Indescribable spans eight centuries to bring a timeless story of the love of God to young people today.

Ways you can get involved:

First of all we greatly covet your prayers. Making a film is a big undertaking and we need God to work through us to bring this about.

You can visit the website to learn more about the project http://morningstarproductions.net/indescribable/

And subscribe to the newsletter to keep up to date. http://morningstarproductions.net/subscribe/

Report on the Paonia Film Festival

April 6, 2011 By Zack Leave a Comment

We had a great time at the Paonia Film Festival!  Films ranged from the entertaining to the educational to the downright bizarre.  It was interesting getting to see a glimpse of a nearby area of Colorado that I was unfamiliar with, and to interact with a whole new type of independent filmmaker.  Let me tell you, this was definitely not your typical San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival crowd!  But we still had a good time.  It was a new experience, and it was good to meet new filmmakers and to see some amazing talent.

But I’m sure you’re wondering, “Well, how did Ragged Edge do?!”   It was one of two films in the drama category, and showed late in the evening.  I was nervous the entire time, not knowing how this crowd would react to a film so targeted at a Christian audience.  I had showed it to our church shortly after I finished it, and they reacted the way I had hoped they would.  I had no idea what to expect at Paonia, especially since a lot of the films shown prior had a distinctive environmentalist worldview.  I was worried that they either wouldn’t get it, or worse, misinterpret the message as an attack on Christians.  But I was pleasantly surprised.  The audience reacted almost the same as the people at church, and seemed to really be touched by it.  After the film showings, there was a Q&A session with all the filmmakers, and I was asked about why I made the film.  Praise God, I was able to answer without fear and shared the hope that we have in Christ.  I later had a very encouraging conversation with the people who asked me that question, who also happened to be fellow believers!  Also encouraging was that later in the Q&A, one of the other filmmakers said that he had really enjoyed Ragged Edge and complimented the cinematography (kudos to my DP, Dave Shaver!).

And while Ragged Edge didn’t win any awards (which were all determined by audience choice), I was very encouraged by the film that did win.  And it didn’t just win one award, it won 5 of the 8 categories, including “Best Film.”  The film was entitled Paper Heart, and was made by a group of young people from Paonia.  I was blown away by the film, a touching silent black-and-white allegorical tale.  After the showing, I remarked to my wife that the film could easily have been screened at SAICFF.  During the Q&A, I found out why!  The story was inspired by a stage drama that a friend of the filmmaker’s told them about.  And that stage drama… was from a Christian college.  When I found that out, I was floored.  Even at a secular film festival, chock full of films with twisted worldviews, God can still be glorified, even in subtle ways!

That wraps up my report from the Inaugural Paonia Film Festival!  I vlogged while we were there, which you can check out below or by clicking here.  And if you would like to get a copy of Ragged Edge, visit StandingSun.com/RaggedEdge
